InS is a private R&D laboratory based in Lyon supporting industrial partners since 2003 in the development of innovative and sustainable solutions. Building on a multidisciplinary expertise in tribology, chemistry and materials science, InS works with stakeholders in paints, varnishes, inks, coatings, adhesives, sealants and surface treatments, as well as in the aerospace, automotive, energy, lubricants and process industries. InS’ activities cover the analysis of surface and interface interactions, including friction, wear, lubrication, corrosion and chemical degradation phenomena, in order to improve reliability and optimize the performance of materials, coatings and systems under real operating conditions. The laboratory relies on a state-of-the-art technical platform combining tribological and mechanical testing (sliding, rolling, surface fatigue, endurance, extended temperature ranges) with advanced physico-chemical characterization of surfaces and interfaces (3D topography, roughness, wear volume and damage mechanisms). In the field of functional coatings, InS develops and implements advanced methodologies for performance and durability assessment, including adhesion, wear resistance, tribological behavior, resistance to severe environments and corrosion performance. The laboratory is also actively involved in innovative approaches combining accelerated electrochemical testing and data analysis, with the growing integration of data-driven tools and artificial intelligence to enhance the understanding of degradation mechanisms and predict the service life of coatings. In response to environmental and regulatory challenges, InS supports its clients in the development and qualification of more sustainable surface treatment solutions, notably PFAS-free and aluminide-free technologies, as well as in the optimization of formulations and processes.
